After high school, Rodgers attended the University of California, Berkeley. He played sparingly during his first two seasons but became the starter in 2003. He led the Golden Bears to a 10-2 record and a victory in the Insight Bowl. In 2004, Rodgers threw for over 4,000 yards and 39 touchdowns, leading Cal to a 10-2 record and a berth in the Holiday Bowl.

Rodgers' success at Cal caught the attention of the Green Bay Packers. They selected him with the 24th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Rodgers spent his first three seasons in Green Bay as the backup to Brett Favre. He saw limited action until Favre retired following the 2007 season.

The 2010 season was Rodgers' breakout year. He threw for over 4,500 yards and 45 touchdowns, leading the Packers to a 14-2 record. He was named the NFL MVP for the first time. In the playoffs, the Packers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chicago Bears before losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl.
